Gwen Stefani's debut solo album, Love. Angel. Music. Baby., opens with a melodramatic song on a pertinent topic: the difficulty of making a debut solo album. "What You Waiting For?," the album's first single, is a nutty internal monologue in which Stefani worries about leaving her day band, No Doubt, laments the short commercial shelf life of female singers, and generally waxes neurotic. "Naturally I'm worried if I do it alone," Stefani sings. "What if they say that I'm a climber?"

It's a bit odd to hear one of our most reliably garish hit-makers fretting about her credibility, especially while squeaking like a robot Lene Lovich over an electro-disco groove. But by the time a choir of multitracked Stefanis arrive to urge the singer to stop her whining and go for it ("You're still a superhot female/ You got your million dollar contract … Take a chance you stupid ho"), one thing is clear: This woman has a Madonna complex. The plan is not to make a nice little solo album before returning to the ska-punk circuit with No Doubt. "What You Waiting For?" is a warning shot fired in the direction of Beyoncé, Britney, and J. Lo—not to mention a certain Kabbalah Centre habitué. There's a new competitor in the global pop diva stakes.

This is a somewhat unlikely turn of events. When we first met Stefani in the mid-'90s, she was a punk chick in a belly shirt fronting an undeniably pop-savvy but frankly annoying band. She seemed destined to go down in history as a period curio—the beneficiary of the grunge-weary public's fleeting fancy for ska. Few were surprised when Return of Saturn (2000), No Doubt's follow-up to the megahit Tragic Kingdom (1995), was a commercial failure.

But then Stefani launched her rebranding campaign, an effort undertaken with such gangling good cheer—and, apparently, without the usual battery of professional stylists and other hired help—that it endeared her to the editors of Jane magazine and other tastemakers who normally cast a jaundiced eye on the careerist machinations of pop divas. First came a cameo singing the chorus on Eve's "Let Me Blow Ya Mind" (2001), a Grammy-winning hip-hop single produced by Dr. Dre, which gave the Orange County skate-betty a ghetto-fabulous makeover. She cashed in her newfound hip-hop credibility on the next No Doubt album, Rock Steady (2001), and the result was a sleek, beat-happy party record. Meanwhile, the glammed-up Stefani strolled down red carpets on two continents and launched her own fashion line, L.A.M.B., which is none-too-subtly plugged in the title of her new record. Later this month, Stefani will make her movie debut as Jean Harlow in Martin Scorsese's The Aviator. All of which leaves Stefani a hit solo album away from a place in the diva firmament.

By all rights, Love. Angel. Music. Baby. should be that album. Stefani has hired a bunch of big-name collaborators (Dr. Dre, the Neptunes, Outkast's Andre 3000, Eve, Nelle Hooper, two members of New Order, and pop-rock hack Linda Perry among others) and made the most gleefully overcooked pop record in recent memory. Love. Angel. Music. Baby. bombards listeners with party chants, vocoder-smudged vocals, superstar cameos, cheesy hip-hop samples—an exhaustive, exhausting grab bag of pop tricks, topped off by the manic presence of Stefani herself, who has always been a kind of one-woman musical shock-and-awe campaign. At a time when production minimalism rules the charts—when producers squeeze hit songs out of little more than a few percussive thumps and a snatch of melody—Stefani has gone in the opposite direction. This is pop maximalism: rococo 'n' roll.

The result is a mess—for the most part, a delightful mess. Critics have sniffed at Love. Music. Angel. Baby. for its promiscuous use of different producers and overall jumbled feel. But rappers regularly put out albums with a different producer on every track and get away with it. It's hard not to suspect that Stefani's critics are falling back on the canard that pop chanteuses are putty in the hands of producer-Svengalis—a charge that has dogged Madonna for two decades and seems particularly wrongheaded in the case of Stefani, who is so audibly in command of this ramshackle album. (Not just any broad could make tracks by Dr. Dre and the Neptunes, those masters of tidy funk, sound so discombobulated.)

As for the complaint that the album is a mess: Well, yes, but that's the point. Stefani's songs are deliberately cluttered and vulgar and swollen with pop clichés; it's an aesthetic of messiness, and to assail Love. Angel. Music. Baby. for being a mess is a bit like faulting Back in Black for being loud and raunchy. Stefani is out for a good time and willing to get there just about any old way—by turning a song from Fiddler on the Roof into a hyped-up bling anthem; by dragging out one of the most shopworn samples in the hip-hop canon, the Isley Brothers' "Between the Sheets"; by lifting a melody line, and the prom-night ambiance, of Madonna's "Crazy for You" and plopping them into her very own make-out ballad, "Cool." Several songs mimic '80s dance pop (it's the least pretentious, most irony-free '80s revivalism you'll ever hear), but no matter how uncannily "Crash" and "Serious" evoke the Top 40 circa 1986, Stefani's hyperactive, pitch-imperfect singing steers them away from pastiche to an altogether weirder place. Lisa Lisa never sounded this unhinged.

Of course, Stefani's speed-freak shtick is part of her musical inheritance. Spazzing out is de rigueur in the Southern California ska-punk scene, and it was Stefani's madcap charisma that won No Doubt millions of new fans when they first broke through to heavy MTV rotation in 1996. These days, Stefani has ditched the Doc Martens, but she's still a zany figure. It's part of what distinguishes her from the Beyoncés and Christinas of the world, but it may also keep her from ascending to their ranks.

There are all kinds of pop divas: tragic-romantic divas in the Piaf-Garland-Holiday mold, ice-bitch MTV divas like Madonna and her followers, even four-octave-range total nut-case divas like Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey. But there's never been a diva clown. Divadom is a deadly serious business. You have to march through your music videos with steely resolve. A certain humorlessness—about yourself and your music—is a prerequisite for the job. (There's a reason why Madonna is Madonna, and Cyndi Lauper is doing guest spots on Deborah Norville Tonight.) However infectious her record is, Gwen Stefani may not quite be able to summon the gravitas we demand of our Queens of Pop.

But Stefani brings something utterly distinctive to the table, namely a knack for writing the kind of idiosyncratic lyrics we associate more with underground rappers and indie rockers than multiplatinum pop stars. Love. Angel. Music. Baby. is very nearly a theme album about Harajuku girls, the wacky teenage fashion plates who parade through Tokyo's Harajuku shopping district wearing pink earmuffs, Minnie Mouse hairstyles, and skirts made out of neckties. Stefani has called these girls her muses, and they crop up everywhere, flanking the singer on her album cover, rescuing her from drowning in the "What You Waiting For?" video, and starring in several songs, notably "Harajuku Girls," the most extravagant piece of musical Orientalism this side of The Mikado. "Harajuku girls, I am your biggest fan," Stefani exults. "Your accessories are dead-on. ... Your underground culture, visual grammar, the language of your clothing is something to encounter." It's a deeply kooky lyric—in its own way, as whacked-out as Robyn Hitchcock's odes to insects and fish or Kool Keith's space-travel raps—and you can't help but admire the songwriter who has dared to set such a private obsession to an electro beat and imagine that it belongs on a blockbuster pop album. Stefani may never capture the zeitgeist like Madonna, or sing like Beyoncé, or move her fall line of track suits like J. Lo.—but she'd trounce them all in a poetry slam.

No contest, no doubt, and not a feeble move in sight: welcome to the hottest, coolest, best-dressed pop album of the year. It’s not entirely unexpected, but “Love, Angel, Music, Baby” – sleek, shimmery, and dripping with all-killer-no-filler musical bling – will outperform even your best guess about the glittery, giddy, smarty-pants talents of young Mrs Rossdale.

Frankly, it’s now clear that Gwen Stefani is, to quote Courtney Love, cruelly out of context, the girl with the most cake. And she’s making a greedy meal of it, too, with a high-style solo debut that’s a breathless trolley-dash through bleeping Eighties fizz, retro-referential old-skool hip-hop, TLC-esque post-Motown, breathily Madonna-besting ballads and gum-snapping, eye-rolling, deliciously wonky comic set pieces, all served up on a sugar-iced plate by a dream-team of A-list collaborators.

This isn’t the first time someone’s assembled supporting talent this heavyweight – OutKast’s Andre 3000, The Neptunes, Nellee Hooper, Dr Dre, Eve, Jam’n’Lewis, Dallas Austin, chart-doctor for hire Linda Perry, Prince sidekicks Wendy & Lisa, New Order – but it’s one of the few occasions that everyone involved sounds so delightedly on top of their game.

It’s probably because Stefani’s so clearly on top of hers. Echoing her growth as a suburban-raised style fanatic capable of teaching the Japanese girls and John Gallianos a thing or two via her own cannily-namechecked label L.A.M.B., musically speaking, she’s nobody’s Kylie-esque dress-up doll either. The up-to-the-minute hooks, tricks and sonic-wonderland aural décor may come courtesy of Pharrell and his ilk, but the real brilliance behind cooing, hiccupping, itchily irresistible single “What You Waiting For?”, the stomping, stripped-back “Hollaback Girl”, the icy-cool schoolyard sass of “Crash” and dizzy, fizzy, sexed-up drive of “Bubble Pop Electric” is all hers. Better and cheekier still, the hands-off-my-man “Danger Zone” sounds like the kind of peerless-pop killer Courtney thought she was cooking up on “Celebrity Skin”, and missed by a mile.

Best of all, those endearingly heartfelt diary-page reflections that made No Doubt’s “Don’t Speak” a stone-cold classic are bigger and better than ever. “Cool” is a liltingly sweet paean to post-break-up friendships, and airy, girlishly fresh album stand-out “The Real Thing” soars lump-throatedly along on a peerlessly evocative Peter Hook bassline like some dreamy combination of Cyndi Lauper’s “Time After Time” and Ms Ciccone’s “True Blue”.

You’ll want to say “you go, girl”, but on the evidence of “Love, Angel, Music, Baby”, Gwen Stefani’s already gone…stratospheric. The competition – if there anyone else working the musical catwalk on this rarefied level – better hang up their Vivienne Westwood platforms and get the bus home.

Solo Stefani: A lion in lamb's clothing

NEW YORK — If you want to know how Gwen Stefani maintains her youthful enthusiasm, not to mention her girlish figure, try chatting with her for half an hour. But take your vitamins first.

A simple “girly-girl” she’s not: “I love that contradiction of being feminine but playing in the boys’ treehouse,” Gwen Stefani says.
"I'm just going to keep talking until you ask another question," Stefani chirps, plopping onto a sofa in MTV's green room. No Doubt's 35-year-old, cellulite-free lead singer has described herself as having been a chubby teenager, but her breathless energy suggests the metabolism of a hummingbird.

"I actually have thought of myself as, like, lazy," Stefani says. "Like, I love sleeping and eating and watching TV. But once I find something that I'm passionate about, I get this crazy drive. Because you hear the clock ticking, and you're like, 'Omigod, I want to do all these things, and I have to hurry up because I'm going to die soon.' "

Certainly, Stefani's schedule in recent years would challenge the most determined multitasker. Since No Doubt's last studio album, Rock Steady, was released in late 2001, she has toured extensively, gotten married — to fellow rocker Gavin Rossdale, frontman for the British group Bush — and acted opposite Leonardo DiCaprio in Martin Scorsese's The Aviator, opening Dec. 17, in which Stefani plays '30s starlet Jean Harlow. Late last year, she also launched her own fashion line, called L.A.M.B., an acronym for "Love Angel Music Baby."

That's also the title of the latest product of Stefani's relentless drive: a new CD. Out today, it's the singer's first album not featuring the three other members of her multi-platinum-selling rock band.

"I can't really call it a solo project, because it's so collaborative," Stefani says. No Doubt bassist and co-songwriter Tony Kanal, Stefani's onetime boyfriend, is a contributor, as is tunesmith du jour Linda Perry (Pink, Christina Aguilera), who teamed up with Stefani for the single What You Waiting For?

Other co-writers, producers and musicians appearing on Love constitute a contemporary pop/hip-hop wish list, sprinkled with names harking back to the new wave and R&B that shaped Stefani's youth: Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, Dallas Austin, Dr. Dre, Nellee Hooper, The Neptunes, Outkast's Andre 3000, New Order's Bernard Sumner and Prince cohorts Wendy and Lisa.

"It's a nice name-dropping situation," Stefani says. "I wanted to make a record inspired by the feeling of all that fun, melodic dance music from the '80s, but to work with people who are in the club today."

A daunting task

Craig Marks, editor of music magazine Blender, says Stefani's approach is both bold and canny. "She seems to be an astute and voracious consumer of pop culture, and that's what she wants to give back. It's a pretty weird, progressive, avant-pop record, so she's in no danger of forsaking her credibility."

Sean Ross of Edison Media Research speculates that while Waiting hasn't taken top-40 radio by storm, it could be that listeners "haven't caught up with it yet. But they certainly want her to have a hit."

But Marks acknowledges that a solo debut, whether the artist wants to call it that or not, "always poses a bit of a risk. Gwen really seems to have enjoyed being with the boys in her band, and that security blanket isn't there now."

Stefani concedes that recording Love was more daunting than she had anticipated. "After 17 years of being in this little comfort zone with my best friends, I had to walk into a room with these people I hardly knew and totally admired. It was like, 'OK, I'll take my clothes off. I know you totally have expectations of me, but let's get intimate.' It was horrifying, but once you get over that hump and the song comes out, you have this little thing that you made together, and it's there forever."

That Stefani would describe her creative process in such terms seems fitting for a self-confessed "girly-girl" who thrives in male company. "I love that contradiction of being feminine but playing in the boys' treehouse. My whole life's been like that."

Her fellow players on Love encouraged Stefani to explore her own womanhood and, on tunes such as Bubble Pop Electric and the Asian-influenced Harajuku Girls, try on different voices. "Usually, I write about whatever I'm inspired by that day," she says. "But I also got to play characters here and there, which added a nice balance."

Stefani, who is considered one of pop's coolest clotheshorses, adds that starting up L.A.M.B. further fired her juices. "I was designing and starting to write the record at the same time, so there was a lot of cross-pollination going on." She adds, "I think I can confidently say that designing is something I want to do for the rest of my life. It's such a passion for me, and there's no emotional stress involved, whereas music is very emotional."

More films may also be part of Stefani's future, though she stresses that she has only a couple of lines in Aviator, in a scene where her Harlow appears with DiCaprio's Howard Hughes. "I definitely got my feet wet, and I got to do it in the big pool. And everyone was so amazing and welcoming, from Leonardo to John C. Reilly to Jude Law. ... There I go, name-dropping again."

For all her celebrated chic, in fact, Stefani still seems less than comfortable with certain aspects of celebrity. "At a certain point with fame, you have to learn boundaries. Or else it's like, 'OK, I think an insane asylum looks really comfortable right now.' "

On the home front

Stefani's own boundaries, predictably, do not extend to discussing recent tabloid reports that Rossdale has a teenage child from a previous relationship. Asked if she and Rossdale plan to have a baby of their own, Stefani says, "I want to have children, but I feel weird talking to the whole world about that, because it's my business. And it's not really up to me, you know? If you see a bump on my belly, then you'll know I'm having a baby."

Stefani concedes that there have been significant changes in her personal life since No Doubt rose to fame in the late '90s, and in the lives of Kanal and bandmates Tom Dumont and Adrian Young. "Tom just got married, Tony's in a really serious relationship and Adrian has a 2-year-old with his wife. And I'm married, obviously. Everybody grew up. And when you marry, that becomes your priority."

In spite of that, and her own ambitions, Stefani insists that "the band is totally still together. Tony was very involved in my record, and we put a greatest-hits record out. When you are in a relationship that many years, you have to recharge the batteries. Now we can start flirting about making songs together again."

Granted, Stefani's pop life may not remain as chaotic as it has been lately. While she's doing a promotional tour for Love, there are no plans for the kind of concert trek that No Doubt's fans have looked forward to after each CD.

"I've done so much touring in my life," Stefani says. "I love it, love it, love it. On the greatest-hits tour (No Doubt) just did, it was incredible to watch those crowds. I cried at every show. But life just feels so short right now. Maybe that's what happens when you turn my age."

Not that Stefani is complaining. "I feel pretty filled up with everything. I feel like maybe I can take a breath and go, 'OK, I've done all these things; now I can just enjoy the moment.' For the first time in a long while, I can't even see tomorrow. But I know that something is going to surprise me."

A whirlwind of tottering heels, toe-less white tights, micro-miniskirt, Vivienne Westwood-type fitted jacket, creamy skin and platinum blonde hair blows into the hotel room.

Gwen Stefani, frontwoman of multi-million-selling US band No Doubt, enters the interview suite and, barely pausing to adjust the flowery shirt gaping almost to her navel, she's chattering before she has even sat down.

It's a Monday morning. Stefani's debut solo single, What You Waiting For?, has been in the shops all of two hours. Her album Love Angel Music Baby, featuring contributions from OutKast's Andre 3000, Dr Dre, the Neptunes, New Order and Pink songwriter Linda Perry, is due in seven days. And her first film role, as Jean Harlow to Leonardo DiCaprio's Howard Hughes in Martin Scorsese's biopic The Aviator, is out at Christmas.

In the US, No Doubt are huge and Stefani is a well-known face. From their first shows in the late 1980s, the band's ska-based rock struck a chord in a country that maintained an affection for the genre long after it fell out of favour in the UK

chic, the St Trinian's dominatrix look, blue-haired beach babe – Stefani has done the lot.

advertisementBut, despite Stefani's iconography, despite the cooler collaborators (Prince, the Neptunes) on their last album, and despite selling 20 million albums worldwide, No Doubt have never really found favour in the UK. To British ears, Stefani's band has always sounded a bit awkward. Naff, even. Her new bright, bold, dance-pop record should change all that.

Now 35, Stefani spends much of her time in London with English husband Gavin Rossdale, formerly of grunge band Bush, but her Californian accent is intact.

Such is her excitement, her end-of-sentence uplifts almost propel her out of her seat. "I had the specific idea that I wanted to make a dance record before I died," she says. "But, at the same time, I really wanted to take a rest and sleep. I had just gotten off tour, I was really burnt out, and there was this pressure to go in the studio and start.

"But I also wanted to start. If I didn't, then when's the next No Doubt record? When am I gonna have a baby? It was like this big clock ticking in my ears. Plus, this dance record was supposed to be this fun, easy project that me and Tony [Kanal, No Doubt bass player] talked about doing, based on Prince, the Time, Lisa Lisa & Cult Jam and all the groups we like. But it just turned into this whole, whaddayacallit, challenge for me, to go out and work with all these new people." She gives a satisfied smile.

Stefani is mildly batty, but in an entirely entertaining way. And she has made a fantastic album.

Love Angel Music Baby is a thumpingly infectious record. Its many single-friendly tracks will be filling dance floors for months to come.

What You Waiting For? is an electro-pop gem. Rich Girl pulls off the tricky feat of marrying production from Dr Dre and lyrics from Fiddler on the Roof. Hollaback Girl sounds like a colliery brass band working with Nine Inch Nails.

Then there's Harajuku Girls, named after a Tokyo shopping district. This track is linked to a woolly performance concept cooked up by Stefani to promote her album with four Japanese-American girl dancers.

The girls recently performed with her on Jonathan Ross's show and Top of the Pops. They were meant to sit in on our interview, silently, like ornaments. Each, apparently, represents one of the elements of the album title Love Angel Music Baby.

"They're like my dream, my muse, my fantasy," Stefani says. Their inclusion reflects her obsession with Japan, sparked when she first visited on tour with No Doubt in 1996. Her fashion label, Lamb, is influenced by the exuberant street styles favoured by teenage girls in Tokyo.

Lamb was launched to huge success last year. Her arrival as a pop icon - a kind of update of Desperately Seeking Susan-era Madonna - was cemented when she provided guest vocals for rapper Eve's Grammy-winning Let Me Blow Ya Mind in 2001.

With her platinum-blonde look and kooky image beloved of style gurus and teenage girls the world over, it's little wonder that Scorsese was enamoured enough to cast her in The Aviator.

All of which has resulted in a healthy tailwind for Love Angel Music Baby. On paper, it could have been a disaster, a record with multiple contributors recruited by committee.

The Real Thing, for example, is co-written by Stefani and Perry, has former Prince band members Wendy and Lisa on piano and guitar, New Order's Peter Hook and Bernard Sumner on bass and backing vocals, and was produced by Nellee Hooper.

"I wasn't worried about anything," she beams. "I was only doing it for my own experience. The only worries were the immediate ones, like 'Oh my god, I'm in a room with Andre 3000, I hope I think of something to say!' "

Stefani has made no plans to tour in support of Love Angel Music Baby; she says she's done enough gigging with No Doubt to last a lifetime. But as a born performer, budding actor and keen lover of fancy dress, she wants to "make as many videos as they'll let me".

This, she says, was the whole point of her album. "No album tracks allowed. It was all about singles. And making a record that's really gonna be your guilty pleasure - even if you hate me!"

"Making the album with all these people made me think of Alice in Wonderland, because it was kind of the trip I was on. The wait is over. Gwen Stefani releases her highly anticipated debut solo single, ‘What You Waiting For?’ on November 8 th through Interscope records.

Gwen wrote the eighties-inflicted dance track with Linda Perry. On ‘What You Waiting For ?’ Gwen sings about her nervousness about launching a solo career against a jumping club beat.

The single is taken from Gwen’s forthcoming abum ‘Love Angel Music Baby’ which will be released on November 22 nd. It is already being talked about as one of the must-have albums of the year. The album includes collaborations with The Neptunes, Andre 3000 from Outkast and New Order.

Gwen Stefani is one of the most unique artists of recent times. She can switch from performing on Stadium tours across America with Blink 182 to playing Leonardo Di Caprio’s girlfriend in the forthcoming Hollywood epic, ‘The Aviator’ to singing on a Grammy-winning hip-hop anthem with Eve.

The music video deals directly with the lyrics of the song and features Stefani searching for inspiration in songwriting. The video starts off with a lengthy non-musical section in which Stefani arrives back in Los Angeles from No Doubt's Rock Steady tour. Despite Stefani being tired and wishing to "sleep", Jimmy Iovine, Gwen's manager, calls on the way home from LAX in an attempt to inspire Gwen to push forward with her solo project thoiugh she decline claiming that she needs to be inspired. The rest of this section of the video shows Stefani fruitlessly trying to write music, while dealing with a bad case of writer's block and while at a vending machine she sees a flyer advertising help for this. On arrival she fills out a form as asked and asks when will she be finished at which points she realies that she is back in the studio with a time large pocket watch on he piano ticking away. A mysterious Japanese toy runs across the top of piano causing her to fall back on her chair and freeze at which point she is transported to a surreal fantasy like environment with an Alice in Wonderland theme. The video often cuts back to Gwen back in the studio, still in her frozrn state singing as the song records itself. Stefani soon rediscovers her confidence and by the end of the song, she is transported back to reality and unfrozen, breaking into an engergetic performance of the song to the pleasure of her mysterious Harajuku Girls. "What You Waiting For?" has also been cited as one of music's most fashionable videos for its extravagant gowns.

No Doubt singer Gwen Stefani will release her as-yet-untitled debut studio album on November 23, with the first single "What You Waiting For?" premiering in October. Stefani's new set features contributions from OutKast's Andre 3000, Linda Perry, Nellee Hooper, and No Doubt bassist Tony Kanal, who co-wrote the songs "Serious" and "Crash." According to No Doubt's official website, those two tracks were recorded at Kanal's home studio.

Stefani told LAUNCH that she learned a long time ago that her best songwriting and performances come from just being herself: "I kind of figured that out a while back, even before the success. I mean, the more that I found myself just being myself, the more unique that I was and I think that's true with everyone. And at that point, I just remember thinking, 'Um, gosh, just be yourself.' The more I was that, the stronger it was. Every time I tried to fake it, it was like, 'You know what? (laughs) It's not working.'"

Stefani is also gearing up to debut the fall collection in her L.A.M.B. clothing line and will make her big-screen debut portraying actress Jean Harlow in the Howard Hughes biopic The Aviator, which stars Leonardo DiCaprio.

Meanwhile, the other members of No Doubt are keeping busy pursuing their own projects. Kanal has teamed up with new artist Elan Atias on his debut album, due out next year.

Drummer Adrian Young will appear on Unwritten Law's upcoming studio album and also has a small role in the new Miramax film The Underclassman due out early next year. He's scheduled to participate in a golf tournament dubbed Celebrity Players tour taking place November 10 through 14 in Montego Bay, Jamaica.

Guitarist Tom Dumont says he's working "on a environmentally-friendly home landscaping project."

Unusually, it was Adrian who was the first of the BWW boys to call it a night, heading bedwards at about 4.30 a.m. Leigh was next, followed by Damian, but it was Phil Gough who won the dirty-stop-out-bad-boy-party-animal stakes, staying out past 8 a.m.
Not surprisingly, the band took some rousing the next day. With a little help from Starbucks, the BWW posse surfaced at about noon, finally mounting Ashley (the tour van) at about 1 p.m. The ride to Fairfax took us over the Golden Gate Bridge, not that we could see it, since a dense cloud completely consumed the landmark – and us – as we drove across.
We drove on, out of the cloud, and into the breathtaking beauty of wine country. After checking into our hotel, we headed to Applebee’s for lunch. Unfortunately a swarm of wasps had the same idea, chasing us from our outside table to the relative safety of an inside booth, where we continued to eat while updating this humble blog.
Then it was off to sound check at 19 Broadway. Some dodgy Mapquest directions meant the band took a brief detour, but we eventually arrived at the venue. An upstairs flat served as the dressing room and “backstage” area. Our host’s wife had kindly cooked a homemade veggie lasagna for our dinner, but as the production manager began heating our meal, smoke filled the upstairs flat. Fear of a full-scale fire quickly brought the production manager’s rare attempt at cooking to a halt, but with the help of an Italian eaterie up the road, who kindly loaned us the use of their ovens, dinner was eventually served in the upstairs tiki bar – and very nice it was too.

The venue filled as our support band, Oslo, took to the stage. As always, they dropped a flawless, energetic and highly danceable set. We love those guys.

By the time BWW took to the stage the room had filled almost to capacity. The proceeding show was extremely hot and sweaty – just how we like them. Afterwards, one over-enthusiastic audience member made a grab for Annabella’s tambourine and bells, but Damian, with his eye always on the ball, made the save of the day. By the time we’d packed and loaded up Ashley it was 2 a.m.. With the local police department standing by to wish us a friendly “goodnight,” it was time to head back to the hotel to catch some Zzz’s before the long journey home the next day.

The venue, The Pound SF, looked like a punk rock club out of the movie Blade Runner. The band had got a somewhat unfortunate first impression the weekend before however, when Leigh visited the site to drop some stuff off for Jimmy the music booker. All the usual Pound crew had vacated the zone so the Hell’s Angeles could host part of their three-day annual convention there. When Leigh arrived, there was a big draino truck outside sucking the crap out of the venue (literally) via two big tubes running all the way through the club into the ladies and gents toilets. We were a bit concerned about the state the venue might be in by the time we arrived for the gig the following week, but those nice Hell’s Angeles boys had cleaned up after themselves, so it was all good.

The band had fun on stage. Like a dog on a lead running around its owner, Phil and Annabella crossed wires, causing what could have been a potentially disastrous entanglement. But the show was tight, the crowd was suitably hot and sweaty, and much fun was had by all.

After the SF gig the band hit a private house party to unwind. There, Leigh, Phil and Adrian were accosted by a professional gorilla who was looking to catch a gig dancing during “See Jungle.” He spent some quality time giving Leigh his verbal resume, and showed Leigh a copy of the previous week’s Bay Guardian in which he was bestowed with the title of Best Gorilla 2004. The band were still on the fence as to whether “See Jungle” would be improved by the addition of a dancing gorilla, but when he offered to bring his own bananas the band agreed to let him audition at the soundcheck for the gig the next day.

For some reason the soundcheck lasted twice as long as the show at the Keyclub. Most of it was taken up with sound-checking Adrian’s ass, since he likes to blast his buttocks with Bow Wow Wow’s bombastic beats which are pumped through two massive bass bins (one for each cheek) in his butt-thumper equipped drum throne – that way he gets to feel the music from the inside out (now you know why he always has a smile on his face). In fact for you gear heads out there, Adrian’s ass has it’s own Power Amp and channel going through the desk (we’re actually working on getting a stereo feed – and possible a DI input to add extra excitement).

After soundcheck Leigh and Annabella did a video interview for LA Nightlife. “The male interviewer flirted outrageously with Leigh as they compared notes on their leather trousers, “ remembers Annabella. “He bought me some beautiful flowers to the show later,” she added. “That show was crazy,” recalls Phil. “The energy was really fierce in the room. It was cannibalistic.”

The backstage VIP greenroom was a complete LA mob-scene. Music types such as Billy Duffy (of The Cult), Boz Boorer and Gary Day (from Morrissey’s band), Norwood Fisher (Fishbone), Eric Erlandson (from Hole) and No Doubters Tony and Tom had turned out for the show, as did Calahan, a new band Leigh’s been producing. As soon as Leigh hit the VIP bar he got hit with a severe LA moment. “I gotta a script for you guys,” said some wannabe producer. “For you and Annabella,” he added before dissolving into the night

The band set off to Boston the next day, a little worse for wear but only an hour behind schedule.
“We’re going through three states today,” noted Adrian. “Including a state of shock and a New York state of mind,” Phil added. As a Velvet Underground record came on the van radio, Leigh recalled that Lou Reed once said something to him that stuck with him: “Excuse Me.”
The miles rolled by as the band listened to a burn of Steve Pulse’s new album that Native Wayne had given Adrian. After taking an unscheduled detour through Boston’s one-way system from hell, the band arrived at their hotel with enough time to take showers before heading over to the venue to sound check.
Though exhausted and a little hoarse, and despite the challenge of a broken guitar string, the band still managed to pull-off what they felt was their best performance to date. Once the band hit the stage all the hassles of the day melted away.

After the show, with a late flight scheduled the next day, the BWW boys headed over to a house party hosted by some of the new friends they’d met at the venue. The apartment, in a converted cookie factory (did you know that Boston was the birthplace of the Fig Newton?), was the perfect chill out spot. The guys hung out, shooting pool, drinking beer and talking bollocks till the sun came up – what better way to end the first leg of their summer jaunt.

Hello all,I realize that I have not posted in some time, for this I am sorry. I am also sorry on behalf of the band to all of the people that did not get into, or that saw only part of the hyndai pavillion show. For the people that did see the show, I feel that this was maybe the best L.A. Show ever for some of us. It was truly an epic experience.Anyway, I am currently on tour now doing some bow wow wow shows this month. It is a bit strange to go from the no doubt tour straight to this tour, but it is a healthy dichotomy for me.Anyway, we would like to thank all that came to see the greatest hits tour this summer. All of you truly keep us going.

Adrian/Bow Wow Wow-East Coast 2004 July 16th FuseTV and BB Kings - NYC

The band had to get up crazy early the next day to tape ESPN’s Cold Pizza breakfast show. The production crew was kind enough to supply intravenous coffee to help wake everyone up. The band recorded three songs for the show (Candy, Do You Wanna and 1000 Tears) and did an interview with the show’s presenter, ex KROQ DJ and VH1 VJ Cane.
As the band piled in the limo to drive back to the hotel Martha Stewart’s sentence was announced on the radio. Phil was particularly gutted by the harshness of her sentence. “She makes the world a better place – one neatly folded fitted sheet at a time,” he says.
Back at the hotel, the band grabbed a couple of hours of Zzz’s before the sound check at 4 p.m. At 5 p.m., since the traffic was gridlocked, the band jogged down Park Avenue to make it in time for their appearance on FUSE TV’s live Daily Download show.
Before the show, David Weir, the music booker of the show asked the band to sign the guest book. Leigh got all artistic and drew the band’s logo. Adrian then drew a two-inch penis as his contribution to the band’s artistic endeavor. Phil helpfully pointed out that “perhaps he shouldn’t have drawn it at actual size,” before drawing his signature guitar man. Annabella then got to work embellishing it with BWW’s office silver sparkly marked pen, drawing a picture of herself flying high on the cord of a heart-shaped balloon.
The band were pleased to get such an enthusiastic welcome from the young FUSE studio audience. They then rushed back to BB Kings to chill in their dressing room before the show. Annabella loved her well-appointed dressing room, which was just off the side of the stage. One of the BB Kings staff said it was located like that “because that’s the way BB King likes it.”

BWW were supposed to go on at 9.15 p.m., but Adrian just had a feeling that 9.21 p.m. would be better. So at precisely 21 minutes past nine the band walked on stage and stuck up the first chords of “W.O.R.K.” They were happy to see that their audience had remained loyal after a break of 6 years

New song “1000 Tears” again went down well with the crowd. “Sexy Eiffel Tower” was another firm favorite that night. By the end of the set the people in the back were dancing on their tables and chairs to the tirade of tribal beats.
After the first encore, crowd wouldn’t let the band go. They’d run through all the songs they’d rehearsed and didn’t know what to do, so asked the crowd what they’d like to hear. Those that wanted “Baby On Mars” shouted the loudest, so the band gave them what they wanted before finally leaving the stage.

But the crowd still wanted more, so the BB King’s staff organized an impromptu meet and greet for the hardcore fans. As the band walked back out front they were surprised to find a line patiently waiting along the sidewall all the way to the rear of the room. They then spent the next hour and a half chatting to fans, and singing autographs. Leigh was happy because he got to sign a few body parts (at Annabella’s instigation), and Annabella was happy to meet Amie Margoles, who was wearing a very cool “Bad Kitty” T-Shirt.

After the show the band hit the Black & White bar. The owner recognized Adrian and the Bow Wow Wow posse, and asked what everyone would like to drink. Annabella was in the mood for some fizziness, so asked for a bottle of Champagne, which the manager ran off to get. A few minutes later he came back looking very apologetic. Ironically the band’s ex-manager Malcolm McLaren had been in the night before and had drank them dry, so vodka had to suffice.

Afterwards, Adrian, Leigh and Annabella hit Big Nicks again, for a late night/ early morning snack. This time Big Nick was actually in da house, and came out to say hi to Adrian. The band finally hit the sack at 5am.

BWW’s Tip of the day: “Have Owen Fegan in your crew. He’s the best tech a band could get.”

Adrian/Bow Wow Wow.East Coast 2004 July 15th DowntownClub - Long Island NY

After sleeping off the effects of their first night in New York, Bow Wow Wow and their trusty tech Owen headed out to Long Island for the first gig of their summer tour – and their first show on the East Coast for six years. The folks at the Downtown rocked. They looked after us soooooooo well.

Adrian did a meet and greet for Zildjian, giving out his signature sticks and drum bags to the line of aspiring drummers who’d come out to meet him. Meanwhile Leigh and Annabella reconnected with some old fans and made some new friends before the show.

In honor of this first gig, Adrian busted out a brand new eyeliner and a fresh pair of Argyle socks. He bounded on stage wearing very little in between to the delight of DJ Malibu Sue, who had been promoting the hell out of the gig all week on her radio show and who was kind enough to introduce the band.

The crowd were awesome, giving it up for the newer songs like "Eastern Promise" as if they were old favorites. Phil was very pleased to see a gaggle of very cute girls at his side of the stage, while Annabella was looking for a real “Cowboy” in the crowd.

After an encore, the band chatted to the fans that had stayed behind until well past 1 a.m., before heading back into Manhattan for some shut-eye.

Adrian’s Tip of the day: “When going though a toll booth on the 495, if you accidentally got in the wrong ezeepass-instead-of-cash lane, don’t get out of the car, otherwise they’ll majorly fine your ass.”

Adrian/Bow Wow Wow Est Coast Tour begins 2004 July 14th East Coast Tour Begins

The Bow Wow Wow crew then dragged their asses out of bed at 7 a.m. to fly to New York. So being mostly British, let’s talk about the weather: It sucked. Semi-hurricanes and mutant killer rain caused our flight to be delayed by over an hour and a half. Luckily we had a fab, mad Jamaican soccer fan as our JetBlue flight attendant, who kept the drinks flowing and the jokes going.
Once in New York, after checking into the hotel, we hit Adrian’s fav NY late night eatery, Big Nick’s. Annabella asked, “Why is it called Big Nick’s?” Then we saw the menu and the pitchers of beer and our questions were answered.
Sitting outside this classic NY deli at Broadway and 77th at 1 a.m. we met some of the maddest BWW fans you could imagine. And not all of them had two legs. One fan even had a dog with a Mohawk. We were really impressed until Leigh pointed out that it was a ridgeback and they came that way.
“Sitting outside at that corner gave us some strange and entertaining experiences that we’d never get in California,” notes Adrian. “I remember Stan,” offered Leigh, who was happy to remember at least one detail from the previous night.

The Bow Wow Wow crew had a blast over at Jimmy Kimmel Live performing “I Want Andy” in honor of Andy Dick and Andy Roddick. Andy Dick won the prize for dancing, “He’s rumored to be a sex addict,” Adrian also noted. “Who probably shares the same therapist,” quipped Annabella. After the show went off air, the band continued playing a five song mini-set. With a solo album in the works, a new fashion line in stores and a big movie on the way, Gwen Stefani's career is on fire. Oh yeah, and did we mention she also has that rock-god husband, Gavin Rosdale? Today, she lets us into her fab world.
When Gwen Stefani walks into the trendy 60 Thompson hotel in New York City, it's obvious why she's touted almost as much style sense as she is for her amazing singing and songwriting abilities. She's dressed in an old pair of Levi's, a Vivienne Westwood belt, a funky Libertine jacket and sexy-as-hell green Christian Dior snakeskin stilettos. The ensemble is made even more striking by Gwen's signature platinum-blond hair, porcelain-pale face and saturated red lips.
And although the 34-year-old Southern Californian's look is pretty much what we've come to expect from the trendsetter, so much has changed in Gwen's world over the past year. For starters, she's taking a break from No Doubt, the band she's been the front woman of for 17 years, to try a few solo projects: an album and her first big-screen role (more on those later). She's also been busy designing a new line for L.A.M.B., her clothing and accessories label that launched handbags with LeSportsac in 2003 and a full clothing line in the spring of 2004.
But the most significant change in her life is spelled out in the platinum and pavé-diamond necklace she's wearing: the word wife in script, given to her by her husband, rocker Gavin Rossdale of the band Bush, on their first wedding anniversary. Even with so much going on, Gwen still made time to dish about it all with Cosmo.
Is No Doubt officially splitting up?
I thought it would be a good publicity stunt to say we were breaking up, but really we're not.
We decided after our album Rock Steady that we were going to take some time apart to pursue independent projects. And I really wanted to do a movie.
You landed the role of Jean Harlow in the upcoming The Aviator.
What is your part like?
It's very small. I was only shooting for four or five days, so I'll barely be onscreen for two minutes, which is so hilarious, because they're making it sound like I'm the star of the movie.
Do you want to keep acting?
I've been trying to do films for years, but it's hard to find the right roles. So I've decided to wait until the next good part comes along and develop a record on my own in the meantime. I'm calling it a side project because I don't want people to think I'm leaving the band.
What's your new solo CD going to be like?
It's going to be a fun, '80s-inspired retro dance album. It's out in August.
How's it coming so far?
It's been hard to focus. Coming off the tour and having my first year of being married,
I'm kind of lazy. I like to lie around with my husband and watch TV and stuff like that.
It takes a lot of selfish time to make music.
That's the reason why the band's been successful all these years -- that's all we ever did.
Did you legally change your name when you got married?
Yeah, to Rossdale. I'm traditional, and so is he. We like tradition here and there.
I kept Stefani as my stage name.
Do you struggle to maintain privacy in your relationship?
I don't ever feel like I've been very secretive about who I am. My songs are basically my diaries. Our relationship is very real, and when we got married, it became even more sacred. But if I start talking about it more, suddenly it's out there for people to criticize and to have an opinion about, and you know what? No. People don't get to do that.
Are you domestic?
I'm not, and it's so embarrassing.
I always thought that I was going to be this perfect wife and mom.
I fantasized about it for so long, and I'm not very good at cleaning up and doing the homemaker thing. The one thing that makes me feel superlucky about my financial success is that I have a housekeeper. And if that ever got taken away, I would be really, really, really bummed.
Why did you decide to start a clothing line?
My stylist, Andrea, and I were making so many outfits that we decided, Why don't we do a clothing line together? It's every girl's dream. We were going to do something really small and just sell our stuff at a few boutiques, and then I met this guy who said he wanted to do a clothing line with me and pay for everything. The best part was he said I could do whatever I wanted creatively. I was like, Are you kidding me? Okay.
How did you come to call the line L.A.M.B.?
I had a dog for 16 years, and I called her Lamb because she was like the lamb in "Mary Had a Little Lamb" -- she followed me everywhere I went. So then I thought Lamb would be a cool name for my clothing line, because it would be like my dog living on through my clothes.
So when we did the bags with Le Sportsac we decided that L should stand for Love, A for Angel, M for Music and B for Baby. So there's a few meanings to it.
What's the best perk of being a star?
You always manage to get supergood tables in restaurants.
Have you ever had a great encounter with a fan?
I was driving down Hollywood Boulevard one day and I saw this guy wearing an old No Doubt shirt, so I knew he was a die-hard fan. I rolled down the window, and I yelled to him, "Hey, cool shirt." He was probably about 19. The guy seriously nearly fell over. He totally tripped.
It was so cute.

This was supposed to be No Doubt's year off.

"We'd decided to take some time apart after touring behind our last record, Rock Steady," explains band bassist Tony Kanal. "Being in a band together this long is like being married. We wanted to reenergize ourselves and get back together when we had something to say musically."
But during their so-called break, No Doubt performed at two Grammy® ceremonies and the Billboard Music Awards. They released Boom Box, an ambitious multimedia boxed set, and a greatest hits collection, The Singles: 1992-2003. "And those records did so well," says Kanal, "that we figured, 'Why not go out on tour this summer? It'll be fun.'"
Kanal was born in India and spent his childhood in Great Britain before his family settled in Southern California. He's been with No Doubt since the band's 1987 inception and has co-written some of the group's biggest songs. He recently produced several songs for the soundtrack to Adam Sandler's 50 First Dates and contributed to No Doubt vocalist Gwen Stefani's upcoming solo disc. We spoke to him the night before he departed on tour.

Do you think you would have had the same passion for ska and '80s rock if you hadn't spent your early childhood in the U.K.?
I always wonder about that. I think it was just part of the environment there, the stuff that I'd see on TV on Top of the Pops. But it wasn't until we started the band that I realized how deeply the love of those two styles was embedded in me from having grown up in England.
Did you study a lot of old records as you were learning to play?
When the band started, Eric Stefani, Gwen's brother, turned me on to all that stuff. I already knew about reggae, but ska was new to me. So, at 16, I got to know the Specials, the Selecter, the English Beat, and all those bands. We all immersed ourselves in reggae and ska.

How did that shape you as a bass player?
I don't think those influences really took hold until we made Rock Steady. I'm not really happy with the reggae-influenced stuff on our previous records. A lot of it falls flat when I listen to it today. But on Rock Steady we got to work with [famed reggae rhythm section and producers] Sly & Robbie in Jamaica. We were recording "Underneath It All," and Robbie Shakespeare told me to play in a completely different way. He made me hold back — he said I was too aggressive. He told me to play with the meat of my thumb to get a rounder attack, as opposed to playing with my fingers like I usually do. He wouldn't let me stop and do punch-ins — I had to do complete takes from the top of the song to the end. It was a cool experience.

How does reggae playing differ from rock playing?
It's all about space. When I was growing up, I was always trying to play licks. Basically, I overplayed. Sometimes that worked with what we were doing at the time. But if you really want to embrace reggae beats, it's a case of "less is more." The space between the notes can be more important than the notes themselves.

How much time do you spend getting tones in the studio?
When we made the earlier records I was obsessed with getting the perfect tone, but I've gotten less concerned with that as I've grown older. At this point, I have a basic way I like my rig to sound, and I stick with that. When we went into rehearsals two weeks ago after not playing together for a long time, my tone was exactly how I remembered it, and exactly what I wanted it to be.

How long have you been playing a Yamaha bass?
A good 15 years. My very first bass was a bolt-on neck Yamaha BB1600. I was slapping a lot back then, and that sounds much better with a bolt-on. But in '95 the neck-through BB3000 became my main bass. I wasn't slapping much anymore, and the beefier, more even sound of that bass made more sense for our music. I didn't start playing five-strings until Return to Saturn in 1998.

How do your basses differ from stock instruments?
Mainly just their colors. The one I'm using on this tour is cream-colored with a black pickguard and nickel-plated hardware. It's a cool, understated bass that reminds me of the old ska and punk days. But mainly I just want something as close as possible to the BB3000 I'm used to playing. I don't want to feel like I'm playing a different instrument.

Any hints about the next No Doubt record?
My guess is that we'll be making a very organic, rock 'n' roll kind of record. Or at least we'll start there and see where it goes. To be honest, we never really plan it out — it's too hard!

No Doubt (can you say GWEN STEFANI) hit the stage with enough energy to power their own amps. Gwen, wearing a leopard skin top - along with a tight fitting sports bra, took full command of the stage. Performing daring cartwheels to aerobically roaming the stage like a circus diva while showing off her sleek body.
The band opened with a raucous version of "Just a Girl." Gwen, with her movie star good looks, aggressively belted out each note as her body teasingly swayed from side-to-side. "Excuse Me" and Ex-Girlfriend" reminded us of the bands early ska influences. Bassist Tony Kanal and drummer Adrian Young (who, at one point, ran around the stage bearing his ass) set the tone with their heavy backbeat. "Hey Baby," "Spiderwebs," "Don't Speak" and "Hella Good" were all consumed by the adoring audience with gluttonous pleasure.
Guitarist Tom Dumont helped accompany Gwen on acoustic guitar for a sweet, yet melancholy version of "Simple Kind of Life," the song she wrote for then boyfriend Gavin Rossdale to help him propose to her. "It's My Life" had it's techno-synth sounds, brush over drums and electric guitars with the classic 80s horns - wash it's cycle out completely.
No Doubt have succeeded in that they can achieve both a musical muscularity and a casual sense of fun all at the same time.
Blink-182 stepped onto a stage that looked like a stripped down version of Pee Wee's Playhouse. With childlike abandon the trio blasted through "All the Small Things" and "Adam's Song." They offered snippets of playfulness and lyricism that's helping to change the definition of their sound. While founded in the school of nu-punk - the boys seem to be trying to stretch out. Bassist Mark Hoppus and guitarist/vocalist Tom Delonge did their usual banter about shit and other things that go bump in the toilet. On "Stockholm Syndrome" Travis Barker's speed laden beats contrasted nicely with Tom's slowed-down guitar work. The band is still in-your-face, fuck the critics, let's party 'til we drop, SoCal punk rock cool while at the same time trying to find new maturity in their music.

Gwen Stefani might be busy making movies and working on a solo album, but the No Doubt singer has no intention of breaking away from the band. However, she did tell Cosmopolitan magazine that it would be a good publicity stunt to, quote, "say we were breaking up, but really we're not."

The band took a break after 2001's Rock Steady to work on solo projects and during that time, Stefani auditioned for movie roles. She'll make her film debut as Jean Harlow in the Martin Scorsese-directed flick, the Aviator, due out in November. Don't expect to see too much of the 34-year-old singer on the big screen though. She told the magazine, "I was only shooting for four or five days, so I'll barely be on screen for two minutes, which is so hilarious, because they're making it sound like I'm the star of the movie."

Stefani's solo debut which is being described as an "'80s-inspired retro dance album" will hit stores in August.

No Doubt will kick off a tour with Blink-182 on June 1 in Noblesville, Indiana.

They released a new DVD The Videos: 1992-2003 yesterday (Tuesday May 4).

No Doubt will contribute the song "Comforting Lie" off their third album, Return Of Saturn, to a new compilation called Rock Against Bush Vol. 2 due in August.

The First Lady Of Rock

Gwen Stefani's house in Los Feliz has a vaguely spooky quality to it. The unease I feel when I pull up in front may simply be the result of my having watched Sunset Boulevard one too many times. Or perhaps the damp January chill has something to do with it. In any case, when the high gates swing open, I walk up the curving, rain-slicked driveway. I am greeted at the heavy wooden door by Stefani's assistant, Pete, an affable young English fellow who is a childhood friend of Stefani's husband, Gavin Rossdale.

The house was built in the twenties, and Stefani is only its fourth occupant, which is one reason many of its original details remain unaltered. The rotunda-like entry, for example, is dominated by a dramatic spiral staircase (worthy of Norma Desmond herself) with a complicated wrought-iron railing featuring a replica of a Spanish galleon. On the domed ceiling above, there's a large fresco of once-famous conquistadors. Pete leads me through a dining room lined with dark paintings and bloodred walls, a medieval chandelier hanging over a long wooden table, and deposits me in an enormous kitchen that has been remodeled to look as if it were designed in the twenties—a sea of black and green ceramic tile bathed in warm, low light. There are candles flickering and religious iconography here and there. It's as if Stefani's entire home is a kind of Gothy take on old Hollywood.

While I wait for the lady of the house, I look at framed family photographs in one corner. There is a picture of Stefani as Jean Harlow, taken on the set of The Aviator, Martin Scorsese's forthcoming Howard Hughes biopic starring Leonardo DiCaprio. Though she utters only a few lines in a movie-premiere scene, a cameo in a Scorsese film on Leo's arm is certainly not the worst way to announce that she is ready for her close-up.

When Stefani appears in the kitchen moments later, her sunny presence throws the Dark Shadows aspect of her house into high relief. As she opens a bottle of Chardonnay, I ask about the photograph. At first she says that it's the actual Jean Harlow, and even though a moment before I had thought it was Stefani, I fall for it because she does not look the least bit like the rock star we've come to know and love. "I'm kidding," she says. "It's me!" She seems pleased that I was willing to believe it might be Harlow. "That's the key, right?" she says. As I lean in to look at the photograph again, she complains about her makeup. "I would have done it a little differently," she says. "I'm always in control of my hair and makeup. I was like, 'Are you sure you want the lips to be that thin? Jean Harlow's were bigger than that. It's not like I didn't read two biographies and watch eighteen of her movies before I got here.' But what are you going to do? They were in control. I couldn't say anything. It was hard."

The makeup artist must have been a nervous wreck. Is there anyone in popular culture today who is as identified with her makeup as Gwen Stefani? The powdered, pale skin, the scarlet lips, those high, arched brows. She has a very particular, almost dated relationship to "putting on her face." She even wrote a song about it a few years back ("If the magic's in the makeup/Then who am I?"). It's so rare to see her out of makeup that when she appeared in a recent video jumping on a bed with a naked face, looking just pretty, she was almost unrecognizable. The image appears to be an homage to those famous shots of a natural Marilyn Monroe, another icon who always had her face on in public and on whom Stefani has been fixated since she was a teenager. "My whole room was Marilyn Monroe posters," she says.

Today Stefani's wearing a sleeveless T-shirt with wide red, green, and yellow stripes, and a pair of complicated new Levi's jeans, worn low and long. Lacy underthings peek out from the top of her jeans. On her feet: sweat socks and Adidas flip-flops. Around her neck is a diamond choker that spells out WIFE in Gothic, diamond-encrusted lettering—a gift from Rossdale. Her white-white hair is a marvel of structural engineering, pulled back tight on the sides and piled high up on her head in a kind of squared-off, simulated Mohawk. Like so much of Stefani's style, the do manages to simultaneously evoke forties Hollywood and early-eighties SoCal punk. It's quite a trick.

Stefani has just gotten home from an audition for Brian De Palma, the director who's partly responsible for making it seem as if something creepy lurks behind every gate in Hollywood. His latest project will do nothing to dispel that notion. He is casting The Black Dahlia, a film based on the James Ellroy novel, which is itself based on the true story of a young Hollywood starlet's gruesome murder in 1947 (her body was found cut in half and disemboweled). Josh Hartnett and Mark Wahlberg have already been cast in the film as two detectives. Stefani tells me that this afternoon she had to read with "some young guy named Josh," not seeming to know who he is. She can sometimes verge on ditzy, but, to be fair, this could just be a sign that she's still sort of a stranger to the film world. "It was really humiliating and nerve-racking, but I feel like I did pretty well," she says. "But I don't know whether I would ever even do it if they offered it to me because it's a kind of a racy part." She amends her last thought slightly: "I know I'm not going to get it, because I think the character is so the opposite of me. She's really dark and naughty and slutty. And she has black hair." This is the first glimpse I get of Stefani's self-image, which, despite her tough-girl stage persona, is surprisingly wholesome, if not prim.

Stefani claims she had never considered acting until she became famous as the lead singer of No Doubt and agents started calling. After she came off of touring for the band's breakthrough album, Tragic Kingdom, in 1997, she settled on David Schiff from United Talent Agency. "All I ever do is go to parties with him," she says. "I never do movies." Spoken like a true Hollywood starlet.

At least he's getting her through the right doors. The last film she auditioned for was Mr. & Mrs. Smith. "It was between me and Angelina Jolie, and I'm like, 'Oh, great. I got a shot here.'" But then," she says, "the whole acting thing really feels like something I could do. Whenever I've done it, whenever I had moments where it works, it's just like performing. You hit a moment. And that's what movies are: a series of moments."

Now we are sitting in her living room, whose artifacts speak to the curious mix of interests in her life, from haute couture to Hollywood history, from reggae to rock 'n' roll. The room is dominated by two plain white sofas and a dark-wood baby grand piano. Above the mantel is a huge black-and-white framed photograph of Bob Marley. Next to it is a red neon heart inside a Plexiglas box, a gift from Gwen to Gavin. Nearby are John Galliano's framed sketches of her wedding gown. And there, in the corner, are Stefani's two Grammys, to which she can now add a third, which she won in February for "Underneath It All," a sweetly demanding little song she wrote about Rossdale before they were married. Lying on the coffee table are stacks of art books, including Icons & Idols, Great Hollywood Movies, and a book of Marilyn Monroe photographs.

At the moment, Stefani is curled up on one of her white sofas sipping a glass of wine. Right behind her head is a series of very glamorous Herb Ritts photographs of her and her husband, propped up in frames and lined up in a row on the piano. The images are, in fact, so glamorous that it's tempting to want to place Stefani in the pantheon with Monroe and Harlow. "Isn't it weird how there are icons like that?" she says. "Like Jean Harlow. They screened her movie Hell's Angels for us. She was really bad in it, really awkward. But she's so magical. She comes on the screen and you're like, 'When is she coming back?' She's just like this lightbulb. And it's so obvious that she's huge."

Stefani could just as well be describing herself. Sophie Muller, who has directed seven of No Doubt's videos, says she has "no idea" whether the singer's prodigious screen presence in music videos will translate to film. "The difference between actors and singers who are great at videos," she says, "is that they're great at being themselves, but an even better, prettier, larger-than-life version of themselves. Actors are often people who don't really know who they are and really love becoming somebody else." Muller and Stefani first met nine years ago as they prepared to shoot the now classic "Don't Speak" video. "She came to my hotel room and I just remember that she was all sparkly," says Muller. "She had diamonds under her eyes and she looked incredibly glamorous. I just knew that she was a big star. You could see that right away."

At 34, Gwen Stefani can sometimes seem much younger. She still talks in the patois of a teenager, beginning sentences with "Dude!" more often than not. Eight years ago, I briefly interviewed a 26-year-old Stefani over the phone. I had been writing astory about women in rock, and just as I was finishing a draft, I saw a video on MTV by a band I'd never heard of. The song was "Just a Girl." Aside from the fact that the lyrics spoke directly to my point, I was thunderstruck by this new? person. She was clearly a post-Madonna, ironic blonde; she spent a lot of time in the video pouting and batting her eyelashes but had rock-hard abs, was dressed half like a boy and half like a cheerleader, and stomped around like a bad-ass rocker chick. I thought: I have to talk to her.

Despite the song's defiant lyrics—"I've had it up to here" is the last line, though it's sung in a cutesy, Betty Boop voice—Stefani claimed at the time to have no idea that it would resonate with feminists and tough grrrls."The scene that I grew up in," she said, "with female artists like Bikini Kill and Hole and all these more punk-rock girls, I always had the pressure of 'You've got to be a feminist and you've got to hate guys. And you've got to cuss and be tough.' And I was never like that. I grew up, like, a Catholic good girl. Total Brady Bunch family. That always kind of scared me, the pressure of having to be so cool or like, fuck you to the world. But I kind of got over that and realized that, yes, I love to dress up and I love to wear makeup and be myself. I like being a girl; I like having a door opened for me; I like all that traditional stuff and I won't deny it."

Nothing has changed since then. As Andrea Lieberman, a stylist who has been working with Stefani for the last couple of years, says, "Gwen is the girliest girl I know. She's like a giant heart wrapped in a diamond-studded bow." Stefani's girlishness seems to be the direct result of the fact that she has lived in the protective bubble first of her family, then of her band.

Stefani was born on October 3, 1969, to high-school sweethearts. Her father, Dennis, who is Italian, worked in research and marketing for Yamaha motorcycles, and her mother, Patti, who is of Irish and Scottish extraction, was a homemaker. Stefani has an older brother and a younger sister and brother who all live in Los Angeles and remain very close. "I was very spoiled compared with a lot of people," she says. "We weren't rich, but we definitely had whatever we wanted." The Stefani household was also very musical. "My parents were into Bob Dylan and were huge lovers of folk music." Stefani distinctly remembers being taken out of Girl Scouts to go see Emmylou Harris perform at a local theater. Her parents took her to see movies and musicals, including The Sound of Music, which, as she likes to say, "changed my life." Then there were the inevitable cast albums for Evita and Annie, which she would sing along to. "I don't have a singer-singer's voice," she says. "I know what my voice is. But I knew that, physically, it felt really good."

As it happened, her father may have been the first to really recognize that her loopy, unpredictable voice was actually rather surprising. "I remember giving my dad a demo tape of a song I wrote called 'End It on This,'" she says, "and he would listen to it on the way to work and he played it for people. I remember two things he said to me. One was 'Everybody's saying that your songwriting is really good and you should just keep going.' And the other was 'Don't ever take lessons, because your voice is really unique. There's just something about it.'"

Even No Doubt was a family affair. Founded by Stefani's brother Eric and his friend John Spence in 1986 as a ska band, No Doubt had very humble beginnings. Gwen was invited by her brother to be the co-lead singer; shortly thereafter the bass player, Tony Kanal, joined the band and they began playing small local venues. A year later, Spence committed suicide, and Gwen stepped into the spotlight. She also became the girlfriend of Kanal, a relationship that lasted seven years and whose breakup she has painstakingly detailed in several songs (most famously in "Don't Speak"). "I was very passive," she says. "My brother did everything. I was like, 'I'm just the sister.' And then after that I was 'Tony's girlfriend.' And that was good enough for me! I never really had any ambitions or goals or dreams."

When Stefani's grandmother died, everyone in the band but Gwen and Kanal moved into her house, and it became known as the Band House, cementing the notion that No Doubt was a family. "I look back on the band, our little family, and how we made it into one. We had a lot of rules that we made up. The band was always number one."

The group slowly and steadily gathered a sizable and very loyal following in Southern California—but there was no game plan. "We never thought we were going anywhere, really; we just wanted to see the next show. It was just a really homemade little fun thing we did literally in our garage." Their big break came in 1990, when No Doubt got signed by Jimmy Iovine to his then-fledgling Interscope Records. "Jimmy took me aside and said, 'Gwen, you are going to be a huge star in six years.' I was like, 'First of all, who the hell are you?' And second of all, 'I'm not going to be in this band six years from now. I'm going to be having fourteen children and be married.' Then, practically to the day, 'Don't Speak' was number one around the world. It's pretty spooky. We always laugh about that."

In 1995, No Doubt went on tour in support of their second album, Tragic Kingdom. Stefani dropped out of school for a semester thinking she'd be gone for only two months. But two months turned into two and half years, and Tragic Kingdom sold 16 million copies. When the tour finally ended, Gwen came home to her childhood bedroom in her parents' house in Anaheim, older and wiser and rock-star famous. She had outgrown her own life.

Three weeks before I visit her in L.A., I meet up with Stefani in London at Home House, a swanky members-only club where she and Rossdale held their wedding reception in September 2002. It is late in the afternoon on a weekday and we are sitting in a quiet, shabby-chic room with a few fussy little sofas and tables scattered about. There are a couple of middle-aged men pretending not to listen, but I can see them peering over their newspapers. Stefani's wearing a pair of wide-leg pin-striped Gucci pants and a short little tan thrift-store jacket over a very tight Vivienne Westwood camisole and a pair of Sergio Rossi red silk stilettos. Perhaps it has something to do with her getup, or maybe it's this old-world setting, but the first thing that strikes me about Stefani is that she is surprisingly ladylike.

While Stefani grows tired of being likened to Madonna, the comparison is irresistible. Madonna filtered her Hollywood-starlet persona through the prism of pop; Stefani has done something very similar through rock 'n' roll. Like Madonna, Stefani has begun to drift away from a street-punk aesthetic and into the front rows of couture shows. And then, of course, there is the English husband and dual citizenship. In fact, Gavin and Gwen were recently invited over to Madonna and Guy's house for dinner, just the four of them. "We do have a lot in common," concedes Stefani.

But while Madonna's efforts to grow up and act like a lady have always felt a bit forced, Stefani seems innately poised and well mannered. As rough-and-tumble as she gets onstage, Stefani leaves that attitude behind when the concert's over. There are no Courtney Love histrionics, no Janet Jackson-style wardrobe malfunctions, no J.Lo diva routines. She's a rare rock star who has it both ways.

Once again, her family seems to have protected her from the worst excesses of her chosen profession, as well as instilled in her a strong set of values. "My mom was really conservative growing up; everything was plain and simple and tasteful, and I couldn't wait to rip my shirts and cut things up." To Stefani, the cover of Vogue represents the pinnacle—more important than even Rolling Stone. "When I told my mother I was going to be on Vogue, she started crying."

Mama Stefani is also beside herself with joy about the fact that her daughter is finally putting out her own collection, L.A.M.B., which debuted in February. "She was looking through the designs in my book, and she got really emotional." Here, she imitates her mother crying: "It's in your blood! This is for Great-Grandma!" Turns out Gwen comes from a long line of seamstresses. "My great-grandma used to start on New Year's day, which was her birthday, and she would sew every person in her family a quilt and, like, flannel pajamas and then the next Christmas you'd get it. Her daughter, my mom's mom, made every single thing my mother wore, to the point where she didn't get to choose her own clothes until she was, like, engaged. And then my mom made our clothes. I used to be kind of bummed. Like, 'Can't I go to the mall?'"

One of the reasons Stefani's look has been so distinct from the very beginning is that she has made most of the things she wears onstage herself. When she became successful and began to tour constantly, she felt she lost her way. Then she met the stylist Andrea Lieberman. "I never really knew anything about fashion," says Stefani. "Andrea made me a lot sleeker and calmed me down. Before I would just wear everything. She matured my style."

Lieberman had been admiring Stefani from afar. "I remember when I saw her wearing Viktor & Rolf pants in a video and I was like, 'She is so fly!' She always had that mad fantastic style, but I felt like nobody had opened her up to the world of couture and designers. But she's like a kid in a candy store. Her eyes are wide-open. She loves to throw it all on and I'll come in and be like, 'There's something to be said for restraint at times.' Part of the joy of working with her is that she has this innate understanding, this cool factor. The It-girl thing."

Their "inspirational tennis match," as Lieberman puts it, led to Stefani's designing and launching L.A.M.B. And while the line is pretty much youthful Gwen-style, is there anything more ladylike and feminine than picking up needle and thread?

It's as if Stefani is trying on the role of womanhood. As she and Rossdale have been seen ringside at the shows in Paris, you get the sense that she enjoys being the soignée bride of an English gentleman. "Being married does make you feel like a woman," says Stefani. "Other people treat you differently too. They have a respect for you as a duo. It's kind of cool."

It's hard not to wonder if the wedding and her subsequent married life have met Stefani's very high (and conventional) expectations, which, two albums ago, she addressed head-on. One song was titled, simply, "Marry Me" ("? I wouldn't mind if my name changed to Mrs. ..."), and in another she yearned for a "... simple kind of life/all I needed was a simple man/so I could be a wife." When I ask her about this, she says, "It's weird because when I was a little girl I was always looking at bridal magazines and drawing what my wedding dress was going to be like. But it was nothing like that. I was on tour and I came home and Gavin had literally planned the entire thing. And John Galliano made my wedding gown, chose the color, everything. It's weird because you think you're going to do all that. I can remember being on tour, crying, 'I'm missing out on my life!' But then I got home two weeks before and got adjusted. And it was very romantic because it just felt like Gavin did it all for me."

One hopes that the 36-year-old Rossdale has a healthy ego because while Stefani's star has been ever-ascendant, his has cooled off considerably over the last few years. When I ask her what he's like, she says, "He's one of those multitaskers—good at everything. He's an incredible cook. I totally scored. I'm a big, huge pig and I love eating, and I married a guy who loves to cook." Rossdale was a serious tennis player when he was young but gave it up when his coach died. "We were in L.A. at a dinner party, and this guy was like, 'You should come over to my house and play tennis.' And that was it. Now he's playing in celebrity tournaments. He's a maniac. He plays like three hours a day."

It is an intriguing role reversal: While Stefani tours the world and seemingly launches one new career after another, Rossdale plans weddings, cooks, plays tennis, and buys art for their two homes. In a funny way, he's living the life that she's always dreamed of. And even though they've been together for eight years, it seems they're still getting to know each other. "We never lived together and we never lived in the same country," says Stefani. "So, all told, we've only been together for, like, two years." She laughs. "We toured so much separately. The most time we would ever spend together before we were married was like four weeks. But this whole past year, we've been together almost every day. Which has just been, like, amazing." She exaggeratedly wipes the back of her hand across her forehead and says, "Phew!" Big laugh. "We like each other!"

Between quietly taking on Hollywood, getting married, and finally designing her own line of clothes, Gwen Stefani is clearly coming into her own. Nowhere is this more evident than in her music. No Doubt's 2002 album, Rock Steady, was a huge success, both creatively and commercially, spawning four hit singles. After nearly fifteen years of being a freakishly successful ska band, No Doubt finally collaborated with other songwriters and producers. The result was a glittering collection of brilliant high-end pop that jumped all over the musical map. In the meantime, Stefani also cannily laid the groundwork for her solo career in 2001 when she collaborated with Moby on the ghetto-fabulous send-up "South Side" and, again, with Eve, on her single "Let Me Blow Ya Mind." Suddenly Stefani became a kind of genre-jumping girl wonder, just as at ease in hip-hop, R&B, and dance music as she has been in the rock world for so long. The surprise for Moby, he says, was that "her voice has this very unique timbre and a very distinctive quality. But after spending a day with her in the studio I also realized that she's incredibly technically proficient and just a really remarkable singer. And she worked really hard."

As if to prove there's nothing she can't do, Stefani is currently putting together her first solo album, which she's calling "a dance record." To that end, she's collaborating with a stellar lineup of producers and songwriters, including André 3000 from OutKast, Dallas Austin, and her ex-boyfriend Tony Kanal. "I really thought this record was going to be easy and fun and short. I'll do a couple covers, I'll work with some really talented people, I don't have to do all the writing. It's a dance record, so it can't really be emotional. Well, I've written about seventeen songs, and only two of them are good enough."

Iovine, chairman of Universal's Interscope division (whom David Geffen recently called "the foremost record executive in the world today"), believes that Stefani's future has never looked brighter. "It can be as big as she wants it to be. She's a driven person, and she's tough on her music. She's got just enough insecurity to get herself where she is. There's no arrogance."

One of things that everyone who works with her seems to agree on is that Stefani is utterly guileless. "There's no front to her," says Muller. "It all just kind of pours out. And she's always kind of in awe of her life. To have done as much as she has and still be grateful and amazed is fantastic." Or, as Iovine puts it, "She doesn't exploit herself. She's not overselling it."

I ask Iovine if he thinks there are any other female rock stars who are as big as Stefani. "No," he says. "What Gwen's got is that she moves the culture. You are truly great when you can move that culture meter—when you can make the needle jump—and I think she's going to move it a lot in the next five years. She just will. She's that kind of artist. I'd bet the store on her."

Let's face it: A big part of Stefani's allure is the killer body. She works out religiously, preferring old-school running and weight lifting to yoga or pilates. Not surprisingly, she has been working out extra-hard lately, denying herself the food she loves so much, for her Vogue photo shoot. But after a glass of wine on an empty stomach in her L.A. living room, she has decided we must go out and get something to eat. "I feel like if I don't eat, I might lose one more pound." She pauses. "But I'm starving." She invites me to join her upstairs while she gets ready and on our way up says, "When I'm home, I work out five days a week. It's a battle, I have to say. I have to stop myself from eating. Ask anyone around me: I have to struggle to have this hot body!" She laughs. At the top of the stairs, there's the master bedroom with a giant, dark wooden canopy bed. Over there, in the corner, is her vanity, a minimalist little moderne shrine to makeup and brushes and potions. There's an office, a guest room, and then, finally, the vast, roaring closet. It's a converted bedroom, actually, with plush white carpeting and racks and racks of clothes. "Look at how lucky I am," she says.

This is the biggest closet I've ever seen, I say.

"Hello. Haven't you seen Paula Abdul's on TV? She has those circular racks, like they have in stores. I was so jealous." She picks out a pair of boots (brand-new John Galliano pointy neo-Victorian) and sits on the floor to lace them up. Then she goes to the racks and pulls out a ratty yet elegant vintage cardigan with stains on the elbows. And then she throws on a sort of peacoat, and off we go.

We climb into an insanely luxurious Range Rover with a computerized dashboard. "This is Gavin's," she says. "I don't have a car right now." She pops in a CD and turns it way up. It's a demo of one of her new songs, called "Crash," reminiscent of Kelis's song "Milkshake" and just as infectious. "Japanese or Italian?" she shouts over herself. We settle on Italian, and she points the car to a neighborhood joint where she's a regular. "It's nothing fancy-pants," she says. When we arrive at the restaurant, it's packed, and we are forced to wait outside on the street. I can see that this makes her a little nervous and maybe a touch annoyed. In London she admits, with refreshing honesty, that "there are certain things about being famous that I love, like being taken care of when I go to a restaurant. I love the attention. It's fun."

If Stefani's career is tied to her physical beauty (it's hard to imagine her maturing into a chanteuse), then there's little doubt that she's in her prime. Once we're seated, I ask her if she worries about there being a time limit on a female rock star's career. "When you get past a certain age, you start thinking about life and how much time 'till you die and you start panicking. I want to have a family, and I haven't even done that yet. I'm worried that I only have a few more years to do this solo record because I don't think I'll care about this record when I'm 45. I don't know. You can't predict how you're going to feel." Then she tells me about a lyric she wrote years ago and has been trying to get in a song ever since: "Born to blossom, bloom to perish."

But for now, Stefani's immense appeal shows no signs of waning. A few tables away, there are two young girls who look as if they're about to burst because of her presence. Stefani notices them and waves. We return to our dinner, and when the plates are cleared, a waitress approaches with a note. "The little girls in the back wanted me to give this to you. They are so terrified."

"Will you just tell them that they can come say hi to me?" says Stefani. She unfolds the note and says. "Omigod. Oh. My. God." Turns out one of the girls, Jana, went to school with Gwen's niece, Madeline. A moment later, the girls appear at our table with their mother. "Jana, you are so cute," says Stefani. "How old are you?" "Eight," says her mother. "I can't believe you know Madeline," says Stefani. "It's so weird because she called me last week and she said I'm her favorite singer. For the first time!"

"Has she not said that every day?" says the mom.

"No!" says Stefani. "Because, hello. Have you heard of Hillary Duff? I finally made it onto her radar. I'm taking her to the Grammys, so watch TV. I'm making her a really cute outfit." (Sure enough, there was Stefani's niece in the front row of the Grammys in some crazy getup.)

As we drive back to her house, Stefani tells me that there's a videotape she wants to show me. It's edited footage of the early days, when Gwen was still the kid sister in her brother's rock band. Once we arrive, she takes me into a dark, cavelike TV room and pops it into the VCR. Suddenly, a girl appears on the screen. She has long brown hair, a round face, and schlumpy clothes. The only reason I know that it is Gwen Stefani is the voice. The eighteen-year-old girl on the TV looks nothing like the glamorous creature before me. "I don't even recognize myself," she says. She fast-forwards through the tape. "I want to show you where my hair goes blonde so you can go, 'Whoa!' OK, here it is. See. The blonde hair changed everything. We're playing at Disneyland. We wanted to do it just to say we did it. That's the dress I wore on the cover of Tragic Kingdom that I bought for $14 at Contempo Casuals."

Wow, I say, I can't believe how different you look.

"Dude, that was a long time ago," she says. "Let's face it. I'm way cooler now."

KLOS, 95.5 FM radio is not only cool, but they rock! Last month (March 20, 2004) the number 1 classic rock station hosted the 4th annual Mark and Brian celebrity golf tournament. Mark and Brian are the station’s weekday morning hosts and their event raised money for the Susan G Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, Aids Foundation and the Stone Soup charity.
Rock stars to movies stars participated in this year’s event and made the day not only enjoyable for the fans, but also profitable for the charities they were golfing to support. Each celebrity was paired up with 3 to 4 other players. And at almost every hole there were fans waiting to see their favorite celeb play and to get their shirts, CD’s or DVD’s signed.

Kevin Costner, Martin Sheen, Adrian Young, David Anders, Jonny Lang, George Lopez, Ryan Styles, Cheech Marin and Rodney Browning Cravens are just a few of the celebrities in attendance. (For a complete list of celebrity participants and complete details of the event and future events, visit KLOS).
The whole day was about how we can all do a little bit to make the community better. The admission was free for all, but everyone was asked to bring bottles and cans for recycling. And whats really cool is that although it was predominately men who participated in the event, much of the funding will be helping and supporting women.

Sure it was a day of sun, fun and lots of food, but it is always greatly appreciated when anyone takes time out of their schedule to take part in helping others. Thanks to all the celebs, the volunteers and to the KLOS team.

They say KLOS rocks southern California, but southern California thinks KLOS just rocks!

Gwen Stefani is not only writing songs for her upcoming solo album, she's also spending time designing clothes and accessories for L.A.M.B., her very own fashion line. In a recent posting on No Doubt's web site (nodoubt.com) Stefani said, "It is an interesting process because by the time the clothes come out they seem almost old to me. I want to go and see them in the stores. I am always most excited about whatever I am working on at the moment. I am currently working on Spring 2005." The 34-year-old singer isn't an expert at creating clothing styles, however. She admits, "It is still at the baby stage and I am still learning about design."

Stefani is also designing another line of LeSportsac bags, and will make her film debut in the The Aviator, which opens nationwide in November.

Stefani will kick off a tour with No Doubt on June 1 in Noblesville, Indiana.

The first single from her debut solo album is due out this summer.

Hmmm, what should I tell you guys?
Things have been so busy around here.
Let me first say thank you for going out to get The Singles Collection.
It has been really rewarding to see the response to the record.
We are now getting ready to go on tour to celebrate and play together again.
We are still in shock about winning the Grammy!! What is going on…two years in a row?!!
We had a really fun night all hanging together.
I had my little 8-year-old niece with me. She is just starting to get into No Doubt so it was really fun to see her little face when we won.
Went to London to sing with Alicia Keyes and Missy Elliot at the Brit awards last month.
It was cool to hang with those girls and see how they are.
Alicia is one of the most positive and up-lifting people I have met in a while.
Missy is cool cool cool !!! I have been in the studio working on my dance record.
It has been really challenging but over the last few weeks I have been able to turn a corner. On the way home from London I stopped off in Atlanta to finish some tracks with Dallas Austin.
I got three done and we are going to finish two more here in LA this week.
Tony and I have a new track we are working on that is really a mixture of everything we loved growing up: Prince, Lisa Lisa and Cult Jam, and Club Nouveau.
I have over 16 songs and plan on writing as many as it takes to make it great.
It is starting to feel like a record and I can see it coming together.
I am hoping to have a single out some time this summer.
I have loads of ideas and tricks up my sleeve so watch out.
I’m scared for you.
The first collection of LAMB is coming out anytime in stores.
It is very exciting for me. It has been a project I have been working on for over two years. It is an interesting process because by the time the clothes come out they seem almost old to me. I want to go and see them in the stores. I am always most excited about whatever I am working on at the moment. I am currently working on Spring 2005!! Crazy how it works. I feel like LAMB is something that is going to take a long time to grow. It is still at the baby stage and I am still learning about design. I just signed on to do one more season with LeSportsac. I couldn’t say no. It is really funny to see everyone with the bags. The second shipment for Spring 2004 is hot and should be out soon. I just started Fall 2004 and I am really excited for these ones.
It is so fun to make bags selfishly for me!
Everything is great and I’m really looking forward to seeing you at the shows!!!!!!!

Hey everyone, I'm posting here to let you all know what I've been up to. First of all I'm playing (along with Adrian) in my friend Merkley's band called "Bing Ji Ling". Well just for a show or three. We're playing at the Viper Room in Hollywood Thursday March 4 at 9:30 pm. Please some down and hear us back up the blue-eyed-soul child himself.
Also I'm friends with Shifty from Crazytown, who is an amazing artist and dude, and I've been honored to co-write and produce a couple of songs for him on his upcoming solo record, I'll let you all know when it's coming out, but you'll know anyway cause it'll be all over the radio and MTV. Also I've spent the better part of the last year producing the debut album for an unparalleled young genius named Matt Costa. Check out http://www.mattcosta.com/
if you want to hear some of his stuff. The album will be out in a few months. What else? There's more but I can't think of it all.
Oh yeah I'm the luckiest guy in the world cause I'm getting married soon to the raddest girl in the world.
Oh yeah, and I almost forgot that I'm the one along with my friend Theodore Delbert, who did the Bathwater remix. It's rad. Our band is called Invincible Overlord and we pretty much are. Okay that's a lot of info, take it easy everyone and see you this summer on tour with No Doubt!
